Bantham

Bantham is located within South Hams of Devon. It is located at the mouth of the River Avon which flows down from Dartmoor.

Historically, Bantham was part of the Stanborough Hundred and is a hamlet of the parish of Thurlestone. It was a small and remote fishing village with difficult access to the sea across the unpredictable mouth of the River Avon.

The mouth of the River Avon, with access to Dartmoor (a source of tin) was a pre-historic site, with evidence of trading settlements on the 'ham'. Roman and post Roman finds have also been made in the area along with significant Mediterranean goods.

The National Grid reference for the centre of the area is SX669439.
